AU Celebrates Athletics Seasons With Athletics Awards Banquet

The American University Department of Athletics celebrated the accomplishments of each of the 16 teams on Sunday at its annual Athletics Awards Banquet held at the Double Tree Hotel in Bethesda, Md. Several major awards were handed out during the event including the Male and Female Senior Student-Athlete of the Year Award, the Barbara J. Reimann Post-Graduate Scholarship and the Team AU Cup. Each team was also featured in its own highlight video wich can now be seen by using the flash player to the right.

Bill Ruvo, a 1982 graduate of the Kogod School of Business and a 2009 Stafford H. Cassell Hall of Fame inductee, presented the keynote address. Ruvo, now the director of sales at Fortress Technologies, was a four-year letterwinner on the men's soccer team and holds three goalkeeping records.

Male and Female Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year - Voted on by AU's head coaches. Traditionally given to individuals with a decorated four-year career.

Barbara J. Reimann Post-Graduate Scholarship - Awarded annually to a senior who has excelled athletically and academically and has decided to contine their education after completing an undergraduate degree.


Kira Sonberg, '09, Women's Lacrosse, Pursuing a Masters in Education






Team AU Cup - Created to reward a team each year for its performance on the field, in the classroom and in support of other athletics teams.


Women's Soccer






Male and Female Super Eagle Award - A new annual award which recognizes a student-athlete who has achieved Iron Eagle status by placing first or second in performance testing for their respective sport and constantly pushes their physical limit and their teammates to excel.

Leslie Fischer, '09

  • Recorded a team-high 31 points on 27 goals and four assists; Second Team All-Patriot League

  • NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Third Team; First Team All-Patriot League

Kelsey Wiggins, '09

  • Recorded five shutouts and a 1.01 goals against average
