AU Finishes Day Two of 2005 PL Swimming & Diving Championships

WASHINGTON - The American University swimming & diving teams completed day two of the 2005 Patriot League Championships on Friday, with junior Valery Fomenko (Jovy-En-Josas, France/Espadon Develizy) breaking a pool and championship record along the way.

Fomenko now owns the championship, league and pool record in the 100 Back after finishing first with a time of 49.33. Fomenko's mark also topples the AU record in that event, set my Mark Liscinsky in 2001. Fellow junior Kevin Faulkenstien (Westmont, N.J./Heddon Township) finished in third in the 100 Back with a time of 50.81,tying him for fourht on AU's all-time top-10 list.

Sophomore Stephen Brennan (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) came out and won the 400 IM with a time of 3:59.23, almost three seconds ahead of the second place finisher. That time has Brennan sitting in sixth all-time for the Eagles. Junior Estebe Salgado (San Sebastian, Spain/E.S. Usandizga) wrapped up 12 team points for AU, finishing seventh in the 200 Free in 1:42.39. Two sixth place finishes in relays added 32 points to American's total, which now finds them in fifth with 229 points.

On the women's side, AU freshman Meghan Thiel (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) won the 200 Free, setting a new pool and the AU record in the process with a time of 1:51.25. Sophomore Kaitlin Moughty (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) finished second in the event with a mark of 1:51.90, which places her third on AU's top-10 list.

Freshman Erin Devlin (West Trenton, N.J./Ewing HS) finished the 100 Breast in fifth with a mark of 1:06.01. Devlin's time places her third amongst AU's top times in that event. Alex Kinzler (Apollo, Pa./Plum ) was right behind her, finishing sixth with a time of 1:07.76, good enough for sixth on the AU top-10 list. Senior Cami Miller (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) finished eighth in the 400 IM 4:40.50. AU scored points on relay finishes of fifth and sixth on the day. The women currently rank seventh in the race for the title, with 229 team points.
