Samia Akbar continued her outstanding outdoor season by winning
the 800-meters at the Maryland Invitational.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After one week off, the
American women's track team returned to action Saturday at the
Maryland Invitational. Junior Samia
Akbar continued her successful season, winning the 800-meters.
The team finished 11th in a meet won by the University of Maryland.
Akbar cruised to victory in the 800, winning by over two
seconds. She has been the first collegiate finisher in the last two
races she has entered. Sophomore Jen
Baclawski also scored for the Eagles, finishing seventh in the
1,500-meters in 5:03.06.
Two school records were established by the Eagle women at the
meet. Leigh
Sorkin became the first American female to ever throw the
discus, throwing 94' 7 3/4". Sorkin was also the second Eagle
female to throw the javelin, throwing 74' 1/2". Chanel
Spriggs made the transition from the basketball court to the
track and established a new school record in the 100-meter dash in
12.65.
Other additions to the all-time top-10 list include Erin
Hickey who moved from sixth to fifth all-time with a four
second personal best in the 1,500-meters (5:11.78). Heidi
Fishpaw moved into the seventh spot in the same event with her
time of 5:17.53. Leah
Heinecke-Krumhus moved to third all time in the 400-meter dash
with her time of 1:05.30. In the 5,000-meters, Siobhan
Uniacke is now fifth all-time (19:09.46) and Lindsay
Gilman is eighth (19:59.25)
The Eagles return to action next weekend at the P.G. County
Invitational in Landover, Md.
