Kinneston Hits 1,000 as @AU_WBasketball Remains Undefeated in PL

Emily Kinneston vs. La Salle (11/13/17)

BOSTON - Senior Emily Kinneston had a milestone performance on Wednesday night as she scored her 1,000th career point to help lead American to a 61-54 win over Boston University.

The Eagles' undefeated run remains intact as they rise to 14-0 in the Patriot League, 21-4 overall. The Terriers fall to 5-9 in the league and 10-14 overall.

Junior Cecily Carl led the Eagles' overall scoring efforts with a 22-point performance, including an impressive 16 in the first quarter. Kinneston followed with 17 points while bringing down a team-high six rebounds and adding six assists and three steals.

Senior Michael Harris joined Kinneston on the glass with six rebounds.

The Eagles shot 46.9 percent from the floor (23-49), 25.0 percent from the perimeter (5-20), and 62.5 percent from the free throw line (10-16).

BU was led by a 21-point effort from Nia Irving. She was the only Terrier to land in double-figures as the team shot 42.2 percent (19-45) from the floor and 16.7 percent (3-18) from beyond the arc.

The Eagles put up one of their highest first-quarter scores this season behind the 16-point effort from Carl, who shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, 2-for-2 from the perimeter, and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. By the break, AU led Boston 26-9.

American struggled to maintain momentum in the second quarter, though, as the Eagles were held to only 3-for-13 from the field as BU hit a 14-6 run to land back within nine by the half.

Kinneston entered the locker room only two points away from reaching the coveted 1,000-point milestone. She broke through the barrier within the first two minutes of the stanza after a nice pass from sophomore Katie Marenyi in transition found Kinneston driving for the layup. She put up one more point off a free through as the Eagles continued to fight against BU's strong defense. By the end of the quarter, AU maintained its nine-point cushion behind four-point efforts from junior Elina Koskimies and Marenyi.

An early run from the Terriers cut that lead down to five in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, but some key defensive stops down the stretch held BU to only four points in the final five minutes of regulation. Although Boston became only the sixth team this season to outscore the Eagles in the final 10 minutes, the third in the PL, AU held on to a seven-point lead at the final buzzer behind an eight-point effort from Kinneston.

AU will return home on Feb. 17 for a 1 p.m. tipoff against Lafayette. That game will also be the Senior Day celebration for the six members of this year's graduating class - Kate BondIo ChaneyMichael HarrisAsha HenleyEmily Kinneston, and Maria Liddane.
